Amnistía exige abogar por los inmigrantes
El organismo señala que éste tendría un rol significativo al supervisar el flujo de personas en la frontera con la Iniciativa Mérida.
Amnistía Internacional solicitó al presidente Felipe Calderón que durante su visita a Estados Unidos inste al gobierno de ese país a respetar los derechos humanos de los inmigrantes.
En una carta enviada a Calderón, el organismo internacional le manifestó su preocupación por la Iniciativa Mérida y el trabajo del Instituto Nacional de Migración, por lo que se refiere a las violaciones de los derechos humanos de los migrantes.
El documento firmado por Larry Cox, director ejecutivo de Amnistía Internacional Estados Unidos, menciona: “Con el ánimo de una mayor cooperación regional y para que sus esfuerzos en representación de los trabajadores migrantes mexicanos tengan credibilidad con los miembros del Congreso de los Estados Unidos y con la sociedad civil, le insto a que durante su visita también se comprometa a terminar con las graves violaciones de los derechos humanos en México, sean estas violaciones a los derechos civiles y políticos, tales como el amplio uso de la tortura, o a los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales, tales como la falta de empleo remunerado para los millones de los ciudadanos de México”.
Amnistía Internacional reconoció la labor que el gobierno mexicano ha desarrollado a nivel internacional en materia de derechos humanos; sin embargo, afirmó que “mucho debe hacerse todavía para terminar con las graves violaciones de los derechos humanos en México”.
Sobre la Iniciativa Mérida, para la cual el presidente George Bush ha pedido un total de 950 millones de dólares para México, Amnistía manifiesta su preocupación porque ha documentado extensamente violaciones a los derechos humanos que incluyen tortura, detención arbitraria, uso excesivo de la fuerza, por las instituciones a las que se les destinarán esos recursos.
Al referirse al Instituto Nacional de Migración, el organismo señala que éste tendría un rol significativo al supervisar el flujo de personas en la frontera con la Iniciativa Mérida.
Tan sólo en la franja fronteriza del sur se ha detenido a más de un millón de migrantes irregulares, la mayoría procedentes de Centroamérica, quienes con frecuencia son víctimas de extorsión, amenazas, maltratos y torturas.
Estas violaciones han sido documentadas por la Comisión Nacional de los Derechos Humanos.

Piden nuevo debate
• Líderes de la comunidad mexicana en Estados Unidos acordaron solicitar al presidente Felipe Calderón, en su visita a este país, que defina una estrategia para impulsar un nuevo debate sobre la reforma migratoria.
• En una reunión privada, los representantes de la comunidad mexicana decidieron que la reforma migratoria sea el tema prioritario a plantear al mandatario en su visita a Chicago el próximo martes 12.
